After 10 years and 18 previous films, Marvel Studios has brought together nearly all of the characters of its Marvel Cinematic Universe into one gigantic film. Against all odds, with its dozens of characters and sprawling story that bounces across the universe, “Avengers: Infinity War” works.

Marvel Studios’ achievement is unprecedented. It has created a run of 19 films ranging in good to great quality that have managed to create one long interconnected story. Some films have been more standalone than others, but they have ultimately been building to “Infinity War,” which, along with its sequel next year, will close out this decade-long storyline.
