With the 91th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, it may seem odd to be reviewing “Happy Death Day 2U” rather than one of the nominated films. Critics are quick to heap praise on prestige films like Best Picture favorite “Roma,” but any well-made film — even a low-budget B-movie — deserves spotlighting. As strange as it sounds, the sequel to the surprise hit horror-comedy “Happy Death Day” is actually worthy of such attention.
“Happy Death Day” was a horror twist on the “Groundhog Day” formula with a vapid sorority girl stuck in a time loop in which she is repeatedly killed by a masked killer. The loop is finally broken when she dispatches her killer and in the process — like Bill Murray before her — becomes a better person having lived the same day over and over again.
