"Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama" is a great title that would be even better with "the musical" at the end of it. (COURTESY OF FULL MOON ENTERTAINMENT)
"Weird Al" Yankovic's 1989 film "UHF" could be a fun springboard for a musical parodying different music genres, films and television. (COURTESY OF MGM)
Several weeks ago, I wrote a piece about films that could benefit from being transitioned to the stage as plays as opposed to the current trend of taking popular films and turning them into musicals. But now I want to offer some left-field choices for movies to be adapted as musicals.
Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" and its sequels became the unlikely candidate for a highly entertaining musical adaptation. (COURTESY OF ANCHOR BAY)
Taking a film and turning it into a musical is hardly a new concept but following the tremendous success of “The Producers” and “Hairspray,” basically any film with name recognition was given the Broadway treatment with varying results. This includes but is not limited to “Catch Me If You Can,” “Legally Blonde,” “Heathers,” “Groundhog Day,” “Mean Girls,” “Beetlejuice,” “King Kong,” “Ghost,” “Sister Act,” “High Fidelity,” “School of Rock,” “Kinky Boots,” “Tootsie,” “The Wedding Singer” and many more.
