TAMWORTH — The Barnstormers Theatre continues its 93rd season with its annual Agatha Christie production, but this year’s selection, “The Stranger,” isn’t the typical whodunit. Rather, we have a female protagonist who finds herself in a perilous situation.
“The Stranger,” which opened Thursday, July 27, in Tamworth and will be performed daily, except Monday, through Aug. 5, is based on the short story “Philomel Cottage.” Christie would later pull elements from both the short story and the play to develop another stage version with Frank Vosper called “Love from a Stranger,” which received a film adaptation in 1937 starring Basil Rathbone. It was later given the film noir treatment in 1947.
