PINKHAM NOTCH — The Appalachian Mountain Club was founded in Boston on Jan. 8, 1876, to explore and protect the White Mountains.

As the oldest outdoor recreation and conservation nonprofit in the U.S., its major milestones include building the first mountain hut (at Madison Spring) in 1888, helping pass the Weeks Act in 1911, and celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026.
