Lethal Weapon

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in 1987's "Lethal Weapon." Written by Shane Black, "Lethal Weapon" was the first of several films by the writer that would use the Christmas season as a backdrop for the story. (COURTESY OF WARNER BROS.)

Shane Black is one of the defining voices of the modern action film. His script for “Lethal Weapon” was a game changer that combined hard-edged realism, sharp one-liners and over-the-top action. The leads — Mel Gibson and Danny Glover — were everymen rather than muscle-bound heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

Black is also secretly one of the more prolific makers of Christmas movies … sort of.
