Writer/director Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” is nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor, and it has made nearly $1 billion at the box office. Not bad for a three-hour drama about the creation of the atomic bomb.
One of the biggest film trends in 2023 was over-long films that didn’t warrant their length. That’s not the case here. Nolan uses the three hours not only to depict the making of the atomic bomb, but to create a portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the theoretical physicist who was the director of Los Alamos Laboratory, where the research and creation of the bomb took place.
Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is up for 13 Academy Awards. (COURTESY OF UNIVERSAL PICTURES)
