“Spider-Man: Homecoming” represents the second reboot of Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man” franchise in a decade. In other circumstances that would be a bad omen, but this latest incarnation of Spidey is a rousing success because he is now part of Marvel Studio’s ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A little background: In the 1980s, Marvel Comics sold the movie rights to its characters to various production companies to stave off bankruptcy. As long as these companies regularly produced films based on these properties, they retained the rights to the characters.
