Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Tom Cruise remains unbeatable as Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," the sixth installment in the action franchise based on the popular 1960s-70s TV series. (COURTESY OF PARAMOUNT)

The “Mission: Impossible” franchise defies all traditional expectations for a long-running film series. No one expects the sixth film in a series started in 1996 to be as fresh, vital and truly excellent as “Mission: Impossible - Fallout” but there you have it. Similar to the equally bewildering “Fast and Furious” franchise, these films just keep getting better and better.

At this point, what is there left to say about these films? They are exceptionally well-executed propulsive machines that leap from one thrilling action scene to another with precision and ease.
