“It’s ‘Jaws’ in space” was how “Alien” was pitched to potential studios. It’s a pretty fair summary. Both films center around stopping a relentless killing machine and keep their eponymous monsters largely hidden to maximize suspense.

But tonally and thematically “Alien,” which is returning to movie theaters in honor of its 45th anniversary, is a much different beast than “Jaws.”
