Blade Runner-2

Ryan Gosling stars in director Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” a sequel to 1982’s Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner.” (COURTESY OF WARNER BROS/SONY PICTURES)

“Blade Runner 2049” is a rare beast: a sequel more than 30 years after its predecessor that doesn’t feel like a shameless cash-in on a popular title. This sequel to 1982’s “Blade Runner” is not only able to continue the story, but deepen and expand it in a way that feels earned.

While it is now regarded by many as a classic, “Blade Runner” received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office upon its original release. To be fair, it opened two weeks after “E.T.,” which was an unstoppable box office juggernaut. A cerebral sci-fi film noir didn’t stand a chance against the heartwarming adventure of a boy and his alien.
