Bradley Cooper’s passion project, “A Star is Born,” a film he directed, co-wrote and stars in, along side Lady Gaga, is arriving in theaters on Oct. 6. This is, depending on how you’re counting, the fifth telling of the story of a declining drunken male star who helps a young female talent to rise to stardom.

A Star is Born (1937)

Janet Gaynor and Fredric March starred in 1937's "A Star is Born," which would go on to be remade three times, with the latest version coming out Oct. 5 starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. (COURTESY OF WARNER BROS.)

The most highly regarded take on this material is the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason, but the original 1937 film is a classic in its own right. The 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson is less regarded, but often praised for the performances of its leads.

What Price Hollywood?

"What Price Hollywood?" starring Constance Bennett bares a striking resemblances to "A Star Is Born," which was release five years later in 1937, so much so that executives at RKO Pictures considered filing a plagiarism suit against Selznick International Pictures. (COURTESY OF RKO PICTURES)
