“Mean Girls” is the latest movie to be based on a Broadway musical, based on a movie. It’s actually a burgeoning subgenre with December’s “The Color Purple” following the same lineage. It puts these films, including “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Hairspray” and “The Producers,” in the position of being both remakes of the earlier film and adaptations of the stage version.

Alec Kerr, film critic for The Conway Daily Sun, is joined by local actors Mackenzie Hester and Frank Thompson to review 2024's "Mean Girls," a blend of 2004's "Mean Girls" and the Broadway musical adaptation.

So, just under 20 years later (the original “Mean Girls" was released April 30, 2004), we have a new film version of the story of “homeschooled jungle freak” Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) experiencing high school for the first time.
