CONWAY — Selectmen on Tuesday talked once more about the need for a cell tower in North Conway before a paid parking program could be implemented.

Two years ago, following the success of paid parking instituted at various recreation sites in town, Town Manager John Eastman promoted a plan to implement a paid parking program in North Conway Village as a revenue generator. It was met with pushback from the business community. And selectmen ultimately backed off because of lack of reliable cell service in North Conway. Cell service would be needed to operate a parking app. But last fall, the planning board rejected a proposal by Verizon to put a COW — cell tower on wheels — in Schouler Park to boost wireless signals in the village.

Has anyone considered “hiding” cell antennas within the towers of the Conway Scenic RR station? I used to live in the Harpers Ferry, WV area where cell service was spotty because of the local mountains. A solution was to install cell antennas in the steeple of a local historic church. The antennas are not visible on the exterior of the steeple. As a bonus, the church gets $$$ from the cell providers for the priveledge of using the steeple as a cell antenna mount.
