MADISON – This year, residents will likely be given an opportunity to change the way the town and school governments function as there are petitioners seeking to convert the town to SB 2 style government and to change the school district to traditional meeting from SB 2. Madison town meeting is March 14. Election day is March 10. The petitions will be on March 10 ballot.
Last year, resident Mark Graffam filed a petition warrant article to convert Madison from traditional town meeting to SB 2. Historically, Madison residents have spent a March Saturday per year setting the town budget and discussing various items like the purchase of vehicles. In SB 2, residents have a deliberative session where they can discuss and modify warrant articles, which get voted up or down by ballot. Last year, Graffam said town meeting is too time consuming and that residents can educate themselves before they vote through PEG TV, newspapers and the Internet. Graffam has been attending town meeting for about 30 years. Decades ago, town meeting had more value as there were fewer places to get information about what's going on, he said.
