CONWAY — On the surface, “The Woolgatherer,” which opens at M&D Playhouse on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at 1857 White Mountain Highway in North Conway, is a deceptively simple play about two people falling in love that becomes a nuanced and authentic character study.

Written by William Mastrosimone, “The Woolgatherer” is set in the small South Philadelphia apartment of Rose (Melissa O’Neil), a flighty childlike neurotic. She has invited Cliff (Eric Jordan) up to her apartment.
