Venom

The anti-hero Venom (Tom Hardy) takes on a thug in "Venom." (COURTESY OF SONY PICTURES)

“Venom” is an odd film made under odd circumstances. Venom is one of Spider-Man’s primary villains and an occasional anti-hero, but there isn’t even a whisper of the webslinger in the film.

Sony Pictures owns the right to Spider-Man and all the characters associated with him. After two successful and well-regarded Sam Raimi-directed “Spider-Man” films in the earlier 2000s, Sony struggled with the character.
