Unicorn Store

Brie Larson stars in her directorial debut "Unicorn Store." (COURTESY OF NETFLIX)

“Unicorn Store,” the directorial debut of Brie Larson, opens with Larson painting a canvas with bright pastel colors and glitter. It is revealed she’s presenting her final work for art school. A panel of serious-minded professors dressed in black mark her efforts as a complete failure.

This opening scene sets up the film’s recurring theme of feminine and girly things being dismissed as unsubstantial and without value. The script by Samantha McIntyre explores the falsehood that being a grown-up means giving up things that are perceived as childish.
