“The Holdovers,” one of the 10 nominees for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, is an astute character study, and an exquisitely detailed period piece, set at a Massachusetts boarding school in 1970.
All but five kids (Brady Hepner, Ian Dolley, Jim Kaplan, Michael Provost and Dominic Sessa) are sent home for a two-week Christmas break from the prestigious Barton Academy. The misanthropic ancient civilization’s teacher Mr. Hunham (Paul Giamatti) is left on babysitting duty. The only other person on campus is Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), the manager of the kitchen.
