“Past Lives,” one of the 10 nominees for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, opens on a shot of three people sitting together at a bar with voices trying to determine what connects this trio. The connections that unite us — in the past, present and future — is the central theme of the beautifully human “Past Lives.”

After the brief prologue, the film flashes back 24 years to Korea. We are introduced to 12-year-olds Na Young (Moon Seung-ah) and Hae Sung (Leem Seung-min). They are clearly sweet on each other, but Na is immigrating to Canada with her family.
