POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU

After video games, trading cards, an animated series and animated films, “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” is the first live-action Pokemon film. (COURTESY OF WARNER BROS. PICTURES)

Full disclosure: I know very little about Pokemon. I’ve never played any of the video games, collected the cards, watched the show or animated films or prowled the streets catching “pocket monsters” with the Pokemon Go app. And yet, I thoroughly enjoyed “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” the first live-action Pokemon film.

“Detective Pikachu” works as a sly expansion of a franchise in which the basic premise revolves around catching and fighting with adorable but powerful mini monsters.
