PORTLAND — Coaches of high school basketball often claim that offense can come and go, but defense will always be there night after night — home or away. The No. 4 seeded Fryeburg Academy girls’ basketball team used its smothering defense, and timely offense to defeat the No. 5 Deering Rams in the Maine State Class A South Basketball Tournament at the Expo in Portland 43-27 on Monday.

FA (10-9) advances to the Class A South semifinals and is scheduled to meet No. 1 Mt. Ararat (17-2) on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. in the Expo.
