At 5 a.m. on Dec. 28, Ned Beecher of Tamworth and Niles Lashway of Somerville, Mass., plus his dog Alfie, started out on a hike from the Lincoln Woods visitor center on the Kancamagus Highway. Their tentative goal was to “do the Bonds,” a 23-mile round trip to Bondcliff, Mount Bond and West Bond in the Pemigewassett Wilderness. Beecher was on skis for the first half. Lashway was on snowshoes.

It was cloudy with some sun. The forecast was for light rain showers in the evening. The Bondcliff Trail was packed down, helping them reach the summit of Bondcliff by early afternoon. They continued towards Mount Bond and West Bond.
