North Country Angler - The Hare’s Ear Hackle

When one is a beginner fly angler, the choice of a fly to place on the end of the line is a constant challenge. For those experienced in the art form, the choice of fly can be broken down into two steps: match the size of the bug and then match the color of the bug. In fly fishing, size does matter.

So early on in this angler’s journey, the fly box had very few fly patterns, but each pattern was available in a multitude of sizes. The Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear was one of those patterns. The fly box contained flies in hook sizes ranging from 8 to 16. And whenever the fishing was slow, a GRHE would save the day.
