Without a local guide, I would have been lost. Riding up and down Sandwich’s dirt roads on July 6 with 12 other MWV Bicycling Club members, sometimes I knew where I was and sometimes I didn’t. So, I just followed the leader — Rachel Anderson. Fortunately, she lives in nearby Tamworth and knows these local roads well. If I did get lost, her husband Bill, designated sweep, would set me straight.

When I got home, I tried to remember and retrace our route. It wasn’t easy. Some roads we pedaled more than once, but in opposite directions. I know we rode through Durgin Bridge in both directions and past North Sandwich Meeting House three times. When I finally mapped out the ride, it looked like a figure eight doubled. The amazing thing was the 20.57 miles we cranked were contained in a small corner of Sandwich bounded by Route 113A, Route 113 and Tamworth’s Pease Hill and Pine Hill Roads. Rachel had once again crafted an amazing and challenging ride.
