Advanced astronomers talk about “black holes” in the universe where strange things happen, and in the past few weeks I’ve been joking about how my house seems to be trapped in a black hole for computer signals. Sometimes the computer on my desk puts my key strokes and their attendant letters and numbers on the screen, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Not only that, but Tuesday brought a concatenation of electronic strangeness unmatched in my experience, and that includes my days in the old Soviet empire when the telephones were so bad that it could be touch and go when trying to get a call through to the building next door. So, thus strengthened, I’ll take a chance on this week.
