Our teachers and our public education system are under attack. Teachers are a critical part of our community and attacking them for doing their job is despicable. The limits on curriculum that Republicans in Concord are promoting are direct attacks on our First Amendment rights. Limiting the teaching of our past will doom our future. We and our students deserve better. Further, the ban on critical race theory teaching has a provisions for teachers to be brought before the state board of education for disciplinary action if they disobey — they can lose their teaching license.
Our teachers are also civil servants who are employed by the tax-paying parents that fund teachers’ salaries and school budgets.
They do not have free reign to teach whatever they “feel” is important or suits their personal political/social/moral orientation. They are bound by a curriculum that is subject to review and approval. There are certain requirements and standards that the taxpaying public has every expectation will be met and even exceeded.
Do we expect the students to be taught basic civics and social behavior(s) and perhaps basic respect for Our Country? Of course, but that can be done while maintaining a neutral and non-confrontational atmosphere or injecting a teacher’s personal opinion(s). That would be the mature, adult approach. In other words, the Professional Teacher’s approach.
Our Public Schools are not supposed to be the playground of Political Activists, Social Experimentation, or presenting some Academic’s latest theory as a truth.
As for Rights, they get to exercise their Rights when they are “off the clock”, just like the rest of us, and more than other Public Servants, like the Military or Law Enforcement.
So, what would your remedy be when the Public Schools are failing to deliver these most basic measures of performance and expectations? Maybe it’s time to fire those that can’t perform their most basic functions. That’s what happens in the private sector.
Seems to me that alternate possibilities aren’t that much of an ask. Neither is a remittance of funds for services not rendered.
So according to you, if teachers promote the discredited 1619 project, start teaching communism, animal equality, or 'aliens are real', parents should just shut up and let you do what you want? No Susan. You just cannot teach whatever you want. It doesn't work that way. Too many agendas and too many teachers are uber liberals.
