You're right, one may not "need" references to validate statements made in a free country, but intelligent people investigate outlandish claims, particularly those made by people with questionable motives and regarding life and death.
And neither side of the argument has corned the market on questionable information or motive. So let's drop the judgemental attitudes and let us make our own decisions based on our own best judgment.
