I knew about it as it had been publicized since 2005. Due to numerous extensions people had about 20 years to comply. By the deadline last May people were still showing up with a regular license at airports. Anyway, went online to government site to see what I needed. A birth certificate or current passport. Marriage license to prove my name change. While looking for them decided to pull out my husbands birth certificate also, so he could also change his license when it came due.
My birth certificate was real, had it for years, just so you know every state issues a different certificate. Couldn’t use mine as it didn’t have a raised seal on it. My husbands also real, had a raised seal, but he had laminated it, so it also couldn’t be used. Meanwhile I’m working, doing this in spare time. It would take weeks to get certificates through the mail, time running before license expired, so took a day out of work, to go to another state, to the get my and husbands certificates in person.
Then I find that my marriage certificate was not usable. Had to again take time out of work to go to town hall to get correct version. Luckily still lived in same town. So now 2 days out of work. Compared to other woman I know, my experience was easy. Not so easy if you were born on the other side of the country from where you now live, and your documents don’t match what the feds say you need. Takes time to apply and get certificates through through the mail, time women won’t have.
How about a a relative of mine, who was born in a US territory, is a citizen, but only has a copy of her birth certificate. Trying, between working full time and caring for her family, to get an original certificate. Not so she can vote, although that will become an issue, but so that if ICE grabs her, she can prove she is a citizen, was born a citizen. I’m sure a copy of a certificate won’t work with ICE, or maybe it will who knows. That’s reality Franklin. The goal is make it harder for more women to vote in November.
