Calling your opponents Nazis is also a well-worn strategy, but most people are wise to this ploy and they just add it to the other slurs given to the Right.
Many illegal immigrants come from countries where they eat things like dogs or pigeons. Think of the Chinese "wet market" as an example. When immigrants eat things like this in their home country and they come here and are given a bus ticket to a place they have never been, they perhaps continue doing the things they've done before. The story is believable and has to be based on something.
One other point. Trump and Vance were repeating things they had heard. The media (when it does its job) has another standard of reporting, which is they must verify reports. When someone says "there is no proof" of something, that means they were not able to verify it. It does not mean it isn't true. Sometimes, unverified reports become verified. When that happens, reasonable people understand that the original statements were true after all, but what the Left then does is say these are just anecdotes. And then they might point to some statistic that is not relevant to the original claim but somehow they think this proves their point, hence a reference to statistics as in this letter. If someone from a foreign country comes here and carries a deadly disease, that person would not have been here except for their illegal entry. It does not matter whether the disease is also present in others.
The best example of this is when illegal immigrants commit crimes. The Left will claim that if overall crime rates are down, that proves illegals are not criminals. But crimes that are committed by illegals would not occur had they been prevented from arriving, thus the crime rate would have been lower.

These two are trying to gain the highest offices in the land, they are not held to a lower standard, they're held to a higher one.
