I was a little surprised when Weston’s farm stand was forced to remove their lovely mural because it was deemed to be a commercial sign. Someone help me understand why a chain saw bear holding an ice cream cone and a trash can in the shape of an ice cream cone are not considered a sign when placed at an ice cream shop in Conway, but a mural painted by an internationally known artist of an historical family farm scene is not allowed on a farm stand because it might be construed as signage? Why are beautiful photographs of Mount Washington posted as murals on the wall of the Mt. Washington Observatory OK, but beautiful hand-painted farm scenes not OK? Maybe Weston’s should get a big bear (or even better a moose!) and dress him up as a farmer holding up a giant zucchini. That would be oh, so much better.
