North Country Angler = Road Closed

The Trails Bureau is locking the gates to the brook trout kingdom. (JASON OSGOOD PHOTO)

The cellphone started flashing like the blinking turn signal at our intersections. The text messages were hot and heavy. A customer from up north had discovered that roads to trout ponds were being gated, and that access for the opening of the designated trout pond season would be delayed until Memorial Day, effectively cutting out the chance to catch the trophy brook trout in these ponds. While the source was reliable, it was prudent to trust but verify.

A text was sent to another customer who has a lease and a camp in the area affected. If anyone knew what was happening, it would be him. The text came back several hours later. Yes, the NH Trails Bureau was planning to gate all ancillary roads in the north country until Memorial Day. This would block the leaseholder from accessing his camp and, in fact, the best part of the trout season on the water where the camp was located.
