Valley Vision’s videotape of the July 9 SAU 9 board meeting offers a revealing window into the layered bureaucracy crippling public education. It seemed particularly appropriate that the most-used camera in the meeting room faced the north wall, on which a large sign conspicuously declares that there is “No Exit.”

Viewers of that video need not be fans of existential literature to appreciate its resemblance to an adaptation of Sartre’s satire of that name, in which three characters are doomed to eternal confinement and interminable argument. One of them realizes, ultimately, that “hell is other people.”
