One of the more troubling things happening in American life today is not simply that people disagree. People have always disagreed, and in a healthy democracy they should. What feels different now is the amount of information, commentary, accusation, opinion, rumor and reaction coming at us from every direction, every waking hour of the day.
The modern news cycle and the internet have created a constant barrage that delivers national news, local news, social media posts, text messages, screenshots, podcasts, videos, alerts and forwarded opinions almost without pause. Some of it is useful. Some of it is misleading. Much of it is incomplete. But all of it competes for our attention.
