I enjoy receiving feedback from readers. During my almost 20 years of writing columns for this paper, I have had many favorable and uplifting words of encouragement that are appreciated. I have received an equal number of unflattering comments and negative (even insulting and demeaning) responses as well. While the positive serves to inspire me, it is the negative responses that often cause me to reflect, adapt and improve. 

One recent unfavorable letter from an apparently learned gentleman from Madison has given me pause. The gentlemen’s published comments, in part, were, “The first two paragraphs of the second Sept. 6 column was simply a mess of gobbledygook (sic).”
