Back in May, I had an “incident” that landed me in Memorial Hospital’s emergency room where it was determined I needed to be transported to the trauma orthopedic team at Maine Medical Center.

Fast forward four weeks when I received a phone call from the ambulance company’s collections department. I was beyond surprised to be told I had an outstanding balance of considerable heft, thus adding trauma to my trauma. I didn’t recall having received a bill, and it turns out I hadn’t. Said bill arrived two days later. (Warning: consider any communication from a provider wanting to arrange payment in advance of receiving a bill a major red flag.)
