Joseph Frye’s tombstone is seen in the Pine Grove Cemetery. Though referred to as “Gen. Joseph Frye,” only his commission as a colonel can be confirmed. Frye was the original settler of 6 acres along the Saco River and founded Fryeburg. (TOM EASTMAN PHOTO)
Col. Joseph Frye’s compass is on display at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington. According to John Stuart Barrows’ history, Frye, who was granted 6 square miles along the Saco River, “was by profession a civil engineer, and was able to run-out his grant himself.” (COURTESY PHOTO)

FRYEBURG, Maine — The French and Indian Wars connection is vital to an understanding of Fryeburg’s founding in 1762.
As a placard at the Fryeburg war hero exhibit at the Col. Samuel Osgood house states: “Joseph Frye (for whom the town is named), born 1712 and a resident of Andover, Mass., joined the militia forces of the colony to fight in the French and Indian War in 1755. The French and Indian War, an extension of The Seven Years’ War, (1754-63) started in 1754 over territorial disputes between the North American colonies of France and Great Britain in areas that are now western Pennsylvania and northern New York. Each side was supported by various Native American tribes.
