GORHAM — Opponents of the Gorham Police department’s agreement with ICE challenged Police Chief Jimmy Willhoite’s decision at Monday’s selectboard meeting.
Willhoite continues to defend signing a 287 (g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a letter he posted to the town’s website, Willhoite said the agreement enhances his department’s ability to protect the town. He said withdrawing from the agreement that gives local and state police the authority to perform immigration enforcement would also cost the town $177,000 in state funds.
The Chief is correct. Law enforcement is not up to a vote of the towns' citizens. The chief is the CEO of the department. The ACLU is never for anything involving law enforcement. The town should continue to hire law abiding Chiefs.
