CONWAY — There was lots of joy in Mudville Sunday afternoon, as one of the three local mud football teams — the Jason Veno-, Chris Olds- and Scott Butters-led North Country Crocs — won its fifth Mud Bowl championship by defeating the founders of the sort of mud football, the Carrabassett Valley Rats, in the finals of the 20-game 12-team, double-elimination mud football tourney at Steve Eastman Memorial Field at Hog Coliseum.

“Five feels pretty fantastic,” said Veno, the Crocs’ veteran left-handed, quarterback, who was field-side with Olds and Butters after championship Game 20 when their team had put up a great defense not only in the finals against the much-improved Rats but throughout the tourney as they compiled an undefeated 5-0 record.
