MADISON — The town seems to have had some successes wrangling short-term rentals but critics say the board is too soft in pursuing financial penalties against owners who have stopped renting, which on some properties have added up to tens of thousands of dollars.

In Madison, new STRs have been banned since at least March of 2022. Since then, converting properties into rentals for periods of less than 30 days is prohibited. The situation is less clear cut with short-term rental properties operating on a continuous basis between 1987 and March 2022. Properties operating, on a continuous basis before 1987 are grandfathered.
