BARTLETT — Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) is one major step closer to becoming Speaker of the House after Republicans tapped him Tuesday as their choice to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Shawn Jasper, who stepped down to become state Commissioner of Agriculture.

Chandler, current deputy speaker, secured the necessary votes during the GOP caucus in Representatives Hall in Concord on Tuesday afternoon. He was one of five Republicans seeking the speakership and was elected after the second round of voting.
