FRYEBURG, Maine — The sun broke through the clouds at exactly 2 p.m., the scheduled start to the solemn ceremony marking the dedication of the former Canal Bridge on Route 5 in Fryeburg to the memory of Nathan Desjardins, who lost his life at age 20 last year trying to save a kayaker's life.

More than 50 people, including state and local police officers, Maine Warden Service, area fire officials, media members, and family and friends, stood on the bridge between two ladder trucks, one from Lovell and one from Bridgton, Maine, which displayed the American flag at one end and the black-white-and-blue law-enforcement flag at the other.
