EFFINGHAM — Effingham writers' night is set to begin its 13th season on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Effingham Public Library, at 30 Town House Road in Effingham. There will be an evening of songs, stories and poetry with folk singer and songwriter Doug Hazard and local author Peter Hagerty.

Hazard started writing songs when he was about 14 years old. By the time he was 18, he’d sold two of them to April-Blackwood Music in New York City, and met the author of “Wild Thing.” He also wrote and performed songs for two short-subject films that played nationally. Thus encouraged, he continued to make up songs and to improve his performance of them but not with any great sense of urgency, because it was, after all, the 1960s.
