It’s fascinating to stand on the shoreline of the Gulf of Maine, home of some of the highest tides in the world, and think the invisible new moon, too close to the sun to see, is up there in the sky, pulling on the earth’s waters. (COURTESY PHOTO)

Nov. 1 is the 11th new moon of the year, thus entering us into the 11th lunar cycle of 2024. Though we are now habituated to the cycle of 12 calendar months, months were originally based on the lunar cycle. There are 13 lunar cycles in a year and thus 13 new moons, with 29.5 days between each one. By this measure, the first day of 2024 would have been Jan. 11 and our current year would end at the end of the 13th lunar cycle on Jan. 24, 2025. Just a thought!
