When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; ...And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. William Wordsworth According to the calendar spring arrived March 20 but judging by the recent weather it seems winter is in no hurry to go away. The daffodil is one of the first flowers to blossom in spring. This symbol selected by the American Cancer Society not only represents the hope for a cancer-free world but also helps to bridge the gap between mud season and the advent of local gardens bursting into bloom. Every year members of the Mountain Garden Club undertake the Daffodil Days fund-raiser responsibilities throughout our valley. This benefit helps fund the many programs of the American Cancer Society including those of research, education, advocacy and service. The Mountain Garden Club in cooperation with the American Cancer Society organizes the sale of daffodils throughout the Mount Washington Valley area. Last month members canvassed businesses and took orders for over 3,000 bouquets, which will be delivered this week.Members will also be selling bunches of daffodils to the public on Friday, March 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at the IGA Supermarket in Conway, Shaws Supermarket, Ames Department Store, Bank of New Hampshire and outside the post office in North Conway. Sales will continue on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the IGA, Shaws and Ames. All proceeds raised go directly to the American Cancer Society. Mountain Garden Club minutes indicate members have promoted this charitable event since 1981. The club has raised donations in excess of $100,000 over the last decade, and this years contribution is expected to total over $20,000.
