A recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a non profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to making roads and vehicles safer according to their website, claims driverless cars are safer than those operated by humans. The report was based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and leaned heavily on Waymo robotaxis as the largest operator of autonomous vehicles, though others were also factored in.
An article by Kelly Blue Book, owned by Cox Automotive, summarizing the details reveals that driverless cars crashed at a rate 68% lower than those operated by humans and that rate is likely lower since many minor crashes or those without injury involving human drivers go unreported. The study also found that Waymo vehicles were involved in 85% fewer single vehicle crashes and 81% fewer injury crashes per vehicle mile driven than human drivers. The study looked at crashes over 50 million vehicle miles.
