CONWAY — Fall is a great time to take a ride on a one of the valley's railroads as a way to take in the brilliant hues of foliage season.

Among the local railroads are the Conway Scenic (356-5251 or www.conwayscenic.com), which offers its legendary Crawford Notch excursions, as well as rides to Conway and Bartlett. Highlights include the Pumpkin Patch Express Oct. 17, the Kiwanis Club's Autumn Express fund-raiser as the last Notch train of the season Oct. 19, Murder Mystery Dinner Trains “Death at Club 54: It's a Groovy Kind of Murder,”  Oct. 24 and 25 and Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.; and Military Appreciation Day Nov. 9 (active and  retired military personnel with valid IDs ride free).
