BROWNFIELD, Maine — The long-running Toy Box charitable fund held $3,942.68 before two withdrawals were made totaling $875, according to Brownfield Town Auditor Ron Smith, who said the remaining $3,067.76 was returned to the town after he raised concerns the money was being held in a private bank account.

Records concerning the account were provided to the Sun on Sept. 29 in response to a Maine Freedom of Access Act request. They included emails among town officials, Town Auditor Ron Smith and people involved with the Toy Box, along with bank statements and an official check returning the remaining funds to Brownfield.
