The return of any chipmunk to my bird-feeding station indicates spring is in progress. It also means I am going to start losing a lot of sunflower seed to this enterprising rodent species.

As soon as my chipmunks start scurrying around, he or she is beginning to restock the larder they just finished consuming this past winter. Since our hobby of feeding the birds doesn’t ask for squirrels or chipmunks to be in attendance, one often ponders how much sunflower seed we are losing to these uninvited guests.
