Weezer-The Teal Album

Weezer (from left, Brian Bell, Rivers Cuomo, Scott Shriner and Patrick Wilson) released “The Teal Album,” a surprise collection of cover songs inspired by the success of last year’s hit cover of Toto’s “Africa.” (COURTESY OF WARNER MUSIC)

A few weeks ago, “Saturday Night Live” did a funny sketch about Weezer fans, with Lesley Jones playing a Weezer aficionado who only admires the band’s first two albums and host Matt Damon playing a Weezer enthusiast who loves their whole catalog. Their impassioned debate ruins a dinner party.

As someone who has participated in such debates — I fell to the side of liking early Weezer — the skit was an all-too-accurate reflection of the sort of vehement arguments music geeks get into.
